Robin AI is an exciting, venture-backed technology startup whose mission is to dramatically reduce the cost and complexity of legal advice. Backed by top London based VCs, Forward Partners and Episode 1, Robin uses a combination of human and artificial intelligence to review and edit contracts and is building software to fundamentally change the legal industry forever.

Robin was established in March 2019 by CEO Richard Robinson (a former City lawyer) and CTO James Clough (a theoretical physicist who works in Machine Learning). They have since assembled a talented and diverse team of legal, software and machine learning engineers to build the next generation of contracting tools.

At Robin AI, we create ground-breaking products that are transforming legal work. Our work is multi-disciplinary and brings together the best talent in engineering, AI and the law. At the heart of our offering is a traditional legal service which is being enhanced by cutting edge machine learning. We are looking for a bright legal mind to help us provide a world-class experience to our customers, help establish and expand our APAC presence, support the development of our junior team members and maintain our exceptionally high service delivery standards.

This role is within the Legal and Product Team at Robin, and will involve working directly with investment teams at some of the world’s largest private equity and debt funds, financial institutions and corporates as they explore transaction opportunities.

The Role

As an experienced legal professional, you will have responsibility for reviewing and negotiating transactional documents, alongside the opportunity to hire and develop junior talent. In addition, Robin offers fantastic opportunities for personal career development in a variety of areas alongside traditional legal work, including client onboarding and management, product development and ongoing customer success. We are location agnostic and will be guided by the presence of the best talent pool. Whether you are based out of Melbourne or Sydney, we will build the Australian office around you. This role will suit an experienced legal professional (whether a qualified lawyer or associate) who might be considering a position within a legal team at an investment bank, fund or asset management company. At Robin we are proud to call a large number of these institutions our clients, and our core transactional work covers many of the same areas and document types – but we work in a much more modern, creative and flexible way!

Tech Stack

  • Reviewing and negotiating contracts such as confidentiality agreements, engagement letters and release letters, using a combination of Robin’s AI technology and your own legal experience.
  • Helping establish and agree contract playbooks with current and new clients.
  • Reviewing the work of junior team members and assisting with their professional development and ongoing training (all of which will also be available to you).
  • Testing Robin’s technology products and feeding back issues, bugs and areas for improvement to our engineering and machine learning teams.
  • As Robin continues to experience success, you will also have the chance to get involved in exciting business-related projects, including helping to support our future fundraising rounds.

Your Skills

You will have at least 1-3 years’ experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating the core transactional documents regularly encountered by our clients (including confidentiality agreements, engagement letters and release letters). You will have previously worked with private equity, asset management or hedge fund clients, whether in-house, at a service provider or at a law firm, and will understand typical fund transaction structures and timelines.

You will enjoy taking the initiative and seeking answers to interesting practical and legal issues. You will be both technical and commercial, both in the practice of law and outside of it. You will be interested in developing your client management skills at a faster pace than might be possible elsewhere, and ideally, you’ll be looking forward to taking ownership of some of our client relationships in due course.  Last (but certainly not least), you will be motivated by working in a fast-paced, diverse and intellectually challenging environment where collaboration between lawyers and non-lawyers is essential to achieving results.
